Strengthening Sustainable Local Economic Development and Social Accountability in Weija-Gbawe Municipality

Updated: 2 days ago

Funding Agency: European Union (EU)/ Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly

Funding Period: 2019-2022

This initiative involves the comprehensive establishment of a vibrant piggery value chain, which includes the development of a modern abattoir, a state-of-the-art breeding center, and a highly efficient feed mill. The creation of this value chain is designed not only to enhance the overall productivity and sustainability of pig farming in the region but also to create direct employment opportunities for local residents. By integrating these components, we aim to foster a robust economic environment that supports the livelihoods of many families.

Furthermore, this initiative places a strong emphasis on building the capacity of 150 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the municipality. These businesses will receive targeted training and resources in essential areas such as business management and financial management skills. This training is crucial for empowering local entrepreneurs, enabling them to effectively manage their operations, make informed financial decisions, and ultimately contribute to the growth of the local economy.

In addition to direct employment and skills development, the establishment of a piggery value chain will also stimulate various ancillary sectors, including transportation, veterinary services, and retail. This interconnectedness will create a ripple effect throughout the community, leading to increased demand for local goods and services. As the piggery sector flourishes, it will attract further investments, thereby enhancing the overall economic resilience of the municipality.

Moreover, the modern abattoir will ensure that the processing of pigs meets high standards of hygiene and quality, which is essential for both domestic consumption and potential export opportunities. The breeding center will focus on improving the genetic quality of the pigs, leading to healthier animals and better yields for farmers. Meanwhile, the feed mill will produce high-quality feed that is tailored to the nutritional needs of the pigs, further enhancing their growth and productivity.

Through this multifaceted approach, we aim to create a sustainable piggery value chain that not only provides employment and builds the capacity of local SMEs but also contributes to the overall economic development and food security of the community. The long-term vision is to establish a thriving ecosystem that supports pig farmers, improves the quality of meat products available in the market, and ultimately elevates the standard of living for many individuals and families within the municipality.
