Updated: May 3

Funding Agency: Newmont Golden Ridge Limited

Funding Period: 2024 - 2027

OLIVES is playing a crucial role in facilitating the reestablishment of livelihoods for an estimated 1,800 Project Affected Persons (PAPs), who have been impacted by various factors related to the project. This initiative is structured around two main components: the Agricultural Improvement Program (AIP) and the Alternative Livelihood Program (ALP). Each of these components is designed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by the PAPs, ensuring that they have the necessary resources and support to rebuild their lives effectively.

The Agricultural Improvement Program (AIP) focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. This program aims to provide PAPs with access to better farming techniques, improved seeds, and modern agricultural practices that can lead to increased yields and higher income. Training sessions and workshops will be organized to educate participants about sustainable farming methods, pest management, and soil conservation techniques. Moreover, the AIP will facilitate access to essential resources such as irrigation systems, fertilizers, and tools, which are critical for optimizing agricultural output. By equipping PAPs with these resources and knowledge, OLIVES aims to ensure that they can cultivate their land more effectively, thereby securing a stable food source and generating income from their agricultural activities.

On the other hand, the Alternative Livelihood Program (ALP) is designed to provide PAPs with diverse income-generating opportunities beyond traditional agriculture. This component recognizes that not all individuals will be able to rely solely on farming due to various constraints, such as land availability or market access. The ALP will explore various vocational training programs that focus on skills development in areas such as handicrafts, small-scale manufacturing, and service-oriented businesses. By fostering entrepreneurship and providing access to microfinance options, OLIVES aims to empower PAPs to start their own businesses, thereby diversifying their income sources and enhancing their economic resilience.

In addition to implementing these programs, OLIVES is committed to monitoring the progress of the enterprises established by the PAPs. Regular assessments will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the support provided and to identify areas that may require additional assistance. This ongoing monitoring will ensure that the initiatives remain responsive to the evolving needs of the PAPs, allowing for timely adjustments and interventions as necessary.

Furthermore, OLIVES will provide continuous business and agricultural development services to the PAPs to promote sustainability. This support will include mentorship programs, access to market information, and networking opportunities with other businesses and agricultural cooperatives. By fostering a supportive environment and facilitating connections within the community, OLIVES aims to create a robust ecosystem that encourages growth and sustainability for the livelihoods of the PAPs.

Overall, the comprehensive approach taken by OLIVES through both the Agricultural Improvement Program and the Alternative Livelihood Program not only aims to restore livelihoods but also seeks to build a foundation for long-term economic stability and resilience among the affected population. By addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the PAPs and providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive, OLIVES is making a significant contribution to the overall well-being and prosperity of the community.
