Construction of sanitation facilities and borehole for Abohema Methodist Primary School in the Birim North District, Eastern Region, Ghana

Funding Agency: Global Givings Foundation / Cummins Ghana Limited

Funding Period: 2014 - 2015

A 6-seater Kumasi Ventilated Improved Pit (KVIP) latrine has been constructed to provide adequate sanitation facilities for both teachers and pupils at the school. The KVIP latrine design is specifically aimed at improving hygiene standards, which is essential for maintaining a healthy school environment. This facility not only accommodates multiple users at once, thereby reducing waiting times, but it also incorporates a ventilation system that minimizes odors and promotes better air quality within the latrine. Such improvements in sanitation are crucial for fostering a conducive learning atmosphere, as they directly impact the well-being of students and staff alike.

In addition to the latrine, a borehole fitted with a hand-pump has been installed to ensure a reliable supply of clean water. Access to safe drinking water is vital for the health of students and educators, as it encourages proper hydration and supports overall health. The hand-pump mechanism allows for easy access to water, enabling users to fetch water conveniently for drinking, handwashing, and other hygiene practices. This is particularly important in a school setting, where the promotion of good hygiene practices can significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, thereby contributing to lower absenteeism rates among students.

Furthermore, a urinal has been provided specifically for the use of teachers and pupils, which helps to streamline sanitation facilities and encourages proper waste disposal. The presence of a dedicated urinal facility not only supports the needs of male users but also contributes to the overall cleanliness of the school environment. By ensuring that adequate sanitation facilities are available, the school aims to enhance the teaching and learning experience for all students while simultaneously addressing health and hygiene concerns that could lead to increased absenteeism.

Collectively, these facilities—the 6-seater KVIP latrine, the borehole with hand-pump, and the urinal—are designed to significantly enhance the educational experience at the school. By providing essential resources for sanitation and hygiene, the initiative aims to create a healthier school environment, thereby promoting regular attendance and active participation in the learning process. This holistic approach not only supports the immediate needs of the school community but also lays a foundation for long-term educational success and well-being.
